We would like everyone who uses this website to read the following information about the latest SCAM EMAILS . There is an internet scam going around and our website and almost all other classified advert websites have been targeted by con artists.
The scam goes as follows:
- firstly they contact you to say they or their client would like to buy your unit
- they almost always offer £100 under the asking price and ask for pictures of the unit
- the next emails tell you that their client will send you a cheque for £3000-£5000 over the agreed price and you are to refund the difference to them, a lawyer or a shipping agent
- they ask for you name, address and contact details, sometimes you bank details
- they are all written rather badly and use ‘pidgin' English
- they claim to be overseas and to have a contact in England , they may provide an English address
- they almost always have a ‘yahoo' email address
Here is a good example of the first email they send to you:
"Hello, Grettings to you and your Families,Wendie is my Name.I will like to purchase your Compass Rallye Gte 460/2, 1998 cost £7,495 .I am intrested and i will like to make offer of £7,200 so let me know what you think about this and also if you have any Pics available send it to me because i will like the Pics it.I will be looking forward for your reply. Regards.."
The cheque/draft they send you is always stolen or a forgery and will never clear in your account, the names and addresses they supply are bogus. They will persistently chase you to refund the difference, of course your cheque will clear, but their's will not.
We advise that you report it to the police, they may not actually be able to help you as the crime is being committed internationally. They may also take the viewpoint that as no money has actually been taken fraud has not yet been committed, however, intent to defraud is a crime, please help us stop it! We recommend that you do not give out your name and address by email unless you are certain that they are a legitimate buyer, if you are in any doubt please contact admin@rvsales.co.uk or call 01793 721721 (office hours). NEVER GIVE BANK ACCOUNT OR CREDIT CARD DETAILS BY EMAIL.
Please don't let this put you off selling your vehicle, if you are wary it will not affect the sale of your unit. We are very sorry that this matter has had to be brought to your attention but we are obligated to warn our customers, we would not want anyone who uses our website to be ripped-off by these people.
Continue to exercise caution during the sale of your vehicle, tell everyone you know about the scam and let us know if you are contacted by a new scammer not on the list.
